Don Thompson
Vice President and General Manager of Engineered Systems
About Don Thompson
Don Thompson is Vice President and General Manager of Engineered Systems at Guardian, where he leads the company’s engineered fall protection business and has played a central role in building and scaling the operation over the past 15+ years.
Don began his career in residential construction, working primarily in estimating and project management before joining Guardian in 2009. At the time, Guardian’s engineered systems business was in its infancy, with only a small team focused on the emerging opportunity for permanent and custom fall protection solutions. Recognizing the market potential, Don became deeply involved in developing the business from the ground up.
His career progression has closely mirrored the evolution of the business itself. Don has held or performed nearly every key function within Engineered Systems, including estimating, field testing and inspections, sales, project support, product and system development, and ultimately business leadership. That breadth of experience provided him with an unusually detailed understanding of the entire value chain—from identifying customer needs and developing solutions through engineering, sourcing, fabrication, installation support and project execution.
Over the past 15+ years, Don has helped transform Engineered Systems from a small, entrepreneurial operation into a national platform capable of supporting complex engineered fall protection projects across the United States. Today, Guardian Engineered Systems provides engineering and site services, custom edge protection and guardrail systems, permanent horizontal lifelines, façade maintenance systems, custom fall-arrest anchors and other engineered solutions. The business has supported thousands of projects and can provide PE-stamped engineering packages across all 50 states.
Throughout that growth, Don has focused on building a scalable business around a simple value proposition: solve complex customer problems with practical, engineered solutions that are safe, constructible and easy to implement. His construction background has been particularly influential in shaping an operating model that connects engineering expertise with real-world jobsite requirements.
As the business has matured, Don’s role has evolved from hands-on technical and commercial execution to broader general management responsibility, including growth strategy, sales, operations, product development, supplier relationships, organizational development and long-term strategic planning. His experience combines deep industry and technical knowledge with the perspective of an operator who has helped build a specialized business through multiple stages of growth.
Today, Don continues to lead Guardian Engineered Systems with a focus on accelerating organic growth, expanding the company’s engineered product and service capabilities, improving operational scalability and positioning the business to capture increasing demand for permanent fall protection and façade access solutions.
