SRL Fall Protection and the Active vs. Passive Debate: Takeaways from The Height Safety Standard

Active vs. Passive Fall Protection: What’s the Difference?

Passive fall protection:

·       Always present and always working, whether workers engage with it or not

·       Examples: guardrails, hole covers, safety nets

Active fall protection

·       Requires the worker to participate every time

·       Example: a body harness, which must be used correctly, or the consequences could be disastrous

·       “When we are in active fall protection, we have to anticipate that a fall is going to happen”, Dan explains

If a worksite allows for passive protection, that's Dan's first choice, since it removes the human element. With active systems, including SRL fall equipment's quality have to be right every single time.

Dan's favorite definition of safety, borrowed from Dr. Todd Conklin: "Safety is not an absence of hazards, it is a presence of controls. "He's heard the old "I'm not paid to be safe, I'm paid to get work don't" mentality firsthand, and doesn't fault workers who came up in a different era. But he sees the industry shifting toward a more positive safety culture.

The Danger of “Ornamental” Fall Protection

"Ornamental fall protection" happens when a worker puts on a harness and automatically assumes they're protected.

Dan shared a story from a shutdown years ago:

·       A young worker tied a six-foot lanyard to a 32-foot SRL, against the manufacturer's instructions

·       He pulled out roughly 20 feet of line while working 22 feet in the air

·       He believed he was safe. As Dan told him, “You’re going to hit the ground if you fall”

The root cause: poor education. The worker had never been shown how the equipment works. That's why fall protection training has to go far beyond PowerPoint presentations. Workers die from falls in this country every single day, and Guardian helps combat the problem through hands on training programs.

Why SRL Fall Protection Is the Future

Self-retracting lifelines, or "yoyos" as many workers call them, have come a long way in just a few years, and Dan believes the industry will keep moving toward them and away from traditional lanyards.

Why SRLs stand out:

·       “SRLs only give you what you take, "Dan explained

·       The line extends as you move and retracts as you return, so there’s no slack trailing behind you to trip over or tangle in rotating equipment

·       Tying off at or above the dorsal D ring with an SRL greatly reduces free fall distance

·       A standard lanyard always carries six feet of fall that must be accounted for; an SRL largely eliminates it and requires far less fall clearance below the worker

Fifteen years ago, lanyards dominated jobsites. Today, more companies are standardizing on SRL fall protection, and innovations like Guardian's CR3 Edge Web Personal SRL show how quickly the category is advancing.

Advice for the Next Generation of Safety Professionals

Dan's advice for young safety professionals:

Grow your network early and identify skilled people you can call for advice.

Earn the trust of the boots on the ground. Quote. You're trained to know the rules, but you're trained in their experience in knowing the execution. Jesus. I have learned so much from people that had Geds than I have from people with PhDs. Certain things can be taught, but certain things must be learned. Do your research before walking into a facility and cultivate valuable relationships early.
